My Happy Horses: Part 8

Equine MediRecord in partnership with Arabian Racehorse is proudly supporting the Arabian Racing Organisation participants and their horses during the suspension of UK Arabian racing.

Pictured here enjoying some down-time is Zayin Zachilles, otherwise known as ‘Tommy’. His owner-breeder-trainer Paul Simmons writes:

“During lockdown,Tommy is currently acting as my hack and also is proving to be a very successful lawn mower at Zayin Arabian’s base on Exmoor.

“Tommy is very vocal and likes the whole valley to hear him when he roars. He loves to go hacking round the woods especially near the Zayin herd’s field where they now come to his call (especially Kallista)! Tommy is in great heart at the moment and his famous happy bucks (tends to buck on the way to the start before running well when racing) are getting a little out of hand as I nearly got un-shipped the other day.”

Zayin Zachilles has raced successfully over seven seasons, winning nine times, the highlight being the NAIP Handicap Stakes at the 2016 Dubai International Arabian Races. This fulfilled a long-held ambition for Simmons to breed and own a DIAR winner. He was also the 2014 ARO Reserve Champion Arabian Racehorse and 2014 British Bred Champion Racehorse.

He continues: “In fine form last year, his best effort came when second in the valuable HH Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak Ladies World Championship (IFAHR) UK stage at Windsor. Now 11, Tommy will be returning to racing as and when we resume, for races in his grade. He will also hopefully do some endurance and he has another foal due this year (his third so far) and has four mares booked for this breeding season.”

Zayin Zachilles (GB) (2009 ch h Kaolino x CS Comete) gives Mr Matt Johnson the ‘happy buck’ experience going to post for the Wathba Stallions (0-80) Handicap Stakes at Hereford in August 2015 – which they went on to win by a neck.
